How can we research immersive experience? Margaret Volante m.volante@surrey.ac.uk

I am offering a workshop series with Tom Wengraf on biographic-narrative interpretive method (BNIM) for researching life-history and lived experience. I used this methodology in the past to illuminate the subjectivity of learning within the professional practice of nurses. Tom is author and editor of several books with examples of BNIM case studies and has provided BNIM training workshops internationally for researchers in a range of disciplines. Currently I am using the method to understand mentors’ experiences of supporting student nurses in the workplace. I am offering a series of small workshops to others who might be interested in experiencing the approach. You can attend as many or as few as you are able.  All the workshops are immersive events of BNIM principles and procedures and places are restricted. Workshop 1: biographic narrative interview with Margaret Volante and Tom Wengraf

Monday 3rd March 2008 at 1300 – 1600hrs University of Surrey: If you are interested in people’s lived experience of all or part of their lives, or of a particular dimension in their lives, narrative interviewing is a very effective way of accessing that experience, and the different perspectives that people can take on the same experience.

 

The narrative interview starts using one open-ended carefully designed narrative question. The interviewee then answers in whatever way and whatever length they see fit, freed from the fear of any interruption or further questioning by the interviewer. The interviewer follows up by asking narrative-pointed questions about some or all of the topics raised by the interviewee in response to the initial narrative question. To facilitate the accessing of particular incident memories and experiences, the interviewer does not ask about matters not raised and asks only in the sequence in which they were raised by the interviewee.

 

The workshop offers an opportunity to explore the narrative question Margaret is using in her interviews with mentors and also to formulate a narrative interview question and experience a narrative interview as both interviewer and interviewee.  

 

Workshop 2: analysis of biographical data using a case with Margaret Volante

Monday 10th March 2008 at 1300 – 1600hrs University of Surrey: The workshop event is a preliminary analysis and interpretation of the ‘objective events’ embedded in the narrative response and trying to see what pattern of action is involved in the chronology of the lived life. 

 

Workshop 3: analysis of telling of the narration using a case with Margaret Volante

Tuesday 18th March 2008 at 1300 – 1600hrs University of Surrey. The workshop event is a preliminary analysis of the succession of segments that make up the telling of the narrative response and then trying to see what pattern of subjectivity in the action is revealed in the sequence of the told story.

 

Workshops 2 and 3 events offer an opportunity to participate in an ‘analysis in action’ event of interpreting the data obtained from the narrative interview of one of Margaret’s cases. The workshops take the form of a panel which starts off the process of interpretation of the case. This method of interpretation involves analysing the ‘chunks’ (workshop 1 ‘objective events’ and workshop 2 ‘segment sequences’) in a future-blind chunk-by-chunk way that simulates the way people live their lives, planning but not knowing what comes next.

 

 

Workshop 4: theory of biographic narrative interpretive method interpretation including micro-analysis of a case with Margaret Volante and Tom Wengraf

Thursday 1st May 2008 0930 – 1600hrs University of Surrey The workshop event explores the assumptions underlying some of the key practices of BNIM interpretive work including ‘micro-analysis’ of the case. BNIM assumes that “narrative” expresses both conscious concerns and unconscious cultural, societal and individual presuppositions and processes. It supports research into the lived experience of individuals and collectives, facilitating understanding both the ‘inner’ and the ‘outer’ worlds of ‘historically-evolving persons-in-historically-evolving situations’, and particularly the interactivity of inner and outer world dynamics.  It especially serves researchers who need a tool that supports understanding spanning sociological and psychological dynamics and structures, and these treated not statically but as situated and affected historically and biographically.

 

 

 

 

 

Offered: a workshop on simulation games (and some other bits too)

 

Once again, I find myself first up.  As I offered at the end of the conference, I've very happy to offer to you all a workshop on using simulation games as a teaching method.  Assuming we can get 10+ people in a place (maybe Surrey, but I can be convinced to do it elsewhere if that makes more sense), then I can offer you a one day (c.10am-4.30pm) workshop, where we'll do a little bit of background on using simulations, and a lot of actually doing simulations (since doing is better than just hearing about).

 

My background's politics, but the workshop wouldn't be discipline-specific, precisely because I think that it has something to offer everyone.  The methods I'm proposing are flexible and can configured in myriad ways, as long as certain core elements are deployed.  You come and try it, and you take what you want to from it.  It's certainly an immersive event and one that people get a lots of different things from.

 Student Evaluation

 

  Hi - I'm Celia Popovic - if you are anything like me you can remember faces or names but not necessarily the two together so here is a visual reminder!

Whilst in Guildford I hosted a conversation about student evaluation. It struck me that as with all learning, immersive learning must surelyhave the student at the centre. I then wondered how you might tell whether an experience was indeed immersive for a specific student. In our conversation we started to talk about practical methods that might allow us to do this, but then the conversation went off in a different (not wrong, just different!) direction from the one I had anticipated. Corinna Heipcke and I are interested in returning to the subject - and would welcome anyone else who is interested in this to join us in an online conversation. If you are interested - could you put your name at the end of this posting, and if there are any takers I will start up a conversation elsewhere on this wiki - is it OK to do that?
