Immersive Experiences in Higher Education

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 2 months ago
We want to attract diverse perspectives to this enquiry. Examples of immersive contexts might include: work placement, term-time employment, volunteering or social enterprise, entrepreneurial activity, certain types of intensive collaborative enquiries perhaps involving role play, field work/study situations or projects, study abroad and study tours, participation in ‘assessment centres’ and virtual worlds like ‘second life’, extra-curricular processes…and many more! Please add your own examples of immersive experiences in higher education.

Ball State University
The immersive learning experience is the signature element of Ball State's "Education Redefined."  See examples at the Virginia Ball Centre for Creative Inquiry

Northwestern University
The Northwestern Immersion Experience aims to move intensive, project-based activities to the centre of undergraduate education.  It may be drawn from the current University curriculum or be completely original and self-designed. It may be pursued on campus or off, in the United States or abroad. For example,
  • pursuing research in a faculty member's laboratory
  • travel abroad to explore a topic of interest
  • an internship in a company or organization in the United States or abroad
  • writing a novella, play, or string quartet
  • researching a topic in an archive or museum or through one-on-one interviews

Stanford University
The Stanford School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals (collectively termed SUMC) are home to world pioneers of techniques, technologies and applications for immersive and simulation-based learning (ISL).

Lancaster University (in the 1990s)

Jo Tait's personal story illustrates the potential for immersive learning within a normal degree framework. There may be elements of Independent Study that can be re-introduced into the curriculum to provide for immersive experience, grounded in a personal commitment to learning
